משה נגבי נולד ב-1927 בתל אביב ולמד בכפר הנוער בן שמן. הוא נמנה עם ראשוני קיבוץ אורים, שם החליף את שמו מפינברג לנגבי. במלחמת השחרור הגן על קו המים לנגב.

השלים תעודת בגרות בתום מלחמת השחרור ולמד בוטניקה באוניברסיטה העברית. ב1953 הגיש את עבודת הגמר שלו לתואר מוסמך בנושא "השפעת אורך היום על המורפולוגיה של נבטי תפוחי-האדמה," בהנחיית מיכאל אבן ארי, שבהנחייתו סיים את עבודת הדוקטור שלו בנושא "מונוגרפיה פיסיולוגית על המלחית החומה" ב-1959. משה לימד באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים בחוג לבוטניקה והיה מעורכי Israel Journal of Botany. ב-1973 הצטרף למחלקה לבוטניקה חקלאית שהקים דב קולר בפקולטה לחקלאות ברחובות. דרך אורה נגבי, רעייתו הארכיאולוגית, התוודע גם לתחום הארכיאובוטניקה וחקר את ה-Crocus sativus L., שממנו מופק תבלין הזעפרן, הן מן הבחינה הבוטנית היישומית והן מן הבחינה הארכיאובוטנית, ערך ספר שהוקדש למדעי הצמח ויעץ בפיתוח ובכתיבת קורסים בבוטניקה באוניברסיטה הפתוחה.

פרש בדרגת פרופסור מן המניין ואחרי פרישתו המשיך ללמד קורס על תולדות הבוטניקה בפקולטה לחקלאות ולצייר. במותו, בשנת 2008, הותיר אחריו כתב יד לא גמור של ספר על תולדות הבוטניקה. מאירה זיו, אלישע תל-אור ונילי בן יחזקאל עיבדו את הפרק הראשון מתוכו למאמר.
